An 80 is a song you would be proud of. It is not a participation trophy — it is genuine quality with room to grow.
What keeps most songs below 90
One weak section. The verses might be excellent but the bridge just restates the chorus. The chorus hook is strong but the second verse retreats into generic territory. A 90 requires consistency across every section.
Safe word choices. "Heart," "fire," "fall," "break" — these are not wrong, but they are the first words that come to mind. A 90-level lyric finds the unexpected word that does the same job better. Not "heartbreak" but "the coffee mug she left on the counter that you still haven't washed."
